A True Missionary Story

This One, written by Natalie Arauco, is a first-person account of the true journey of a boy growing up in the rural mountains of Chivoc, Guatemala.

Surrounded by poverty, family struggle, and spiritual darkness, Victor carried more weight than a child should ever bear. Yet God was already whispering to his heart long before he understood His name.

Isabel

Q: Tell me about your life before knowing Christ. Before knowing Christ… well, you could say it was a wild life. I liked worldly things a lot, even drinking, swearing, pursuing sexual pleasures. I...

Chivoc Bible Study

The Chivoc discipleship group began with two women, Ana and Estela. We sat in a small, dimly lit room. Their sons played with toys on the dirt floor as we quietly sang hymns, careful not to be too...

This One: The Story of Victor

Chapter 1: The Whisper The heat pressed down through the tin roof of the small village school in Chivoc, Guatemala, and the air vibrated with that quiet mix of nerves and new beginnings. Plastic...

399 Years

Before the plagues that shook Egypt, before the cry of a child in a manger, before hope and salvation broke through the darkness —399 years of suffering and of silence had passed. What do you do in...

A Father’s Gift

Isabel looked up from where he sat among the other leaders of the Bible study. The chilly night wind rustled the trees outside of the small home, branches scraped against the tin roof of the porch....

The Greatest Gift

In the heart of Oaxaca, Mexico, lies the region of Mixteca Alta, home to rugged mountains and the resilient Mixteca people—an unreached group scattered across hundreds of remote villages. These...

Bonds of Hope

I sit at a table with three 11-year-old girls. They all look at me expectantly. Waiting for me to give an answer. But I am speechless. On the other side of the porch, the women’s group erupts in...

A Good Father

“How am I supposed to know what a good dad is?” Jasper crosses his arms and slumps back against his seat. “I never had one.” I take a breath and put down my plate of stewed greens and beef. A simple...

Someone is thinking of me? Part 1

Mark covers his face as soon as his picture appears on my phone. “Oh no, Miss!” “There’s nothing to be nervous about.” I hold back a chuckle. “It’s just part of the sponsorship app. Look.” I select...

Shared Tears

I shove the final sack of corn into the trunk and slam the door closed. “All right, Let’s go, kids!” Georgia continues to harvest under the beating sun, yanking the dry husks from the stalk and...

What is the Mission?

The location

Scattered across the rugged mountains of the Mixteca Alta in Oaxaca, Mexico, are the villages of the resilient Mixtec people—an indigenous group deeply rooted in tradition, identity, and hard work. Most are subsistence farmers, striving to give their children a better future and break free from the cycles of violence and conflict that have long marked the region.

The need

In the Mixteca Alta, believers are few and churches even fewer. Most villages remain completely unreached and some even hostile to the gospel. These communities are marked by a deep hunger—for knowledge, for hope, and for the truth of Christ that alone can bring lasting freedom.

The Plan

Local missionaries often face suspicion, closed doors, and even hostility from the villages of the Mixteca Alta. The Mixtec people are deeply wary, not only of their neighbors, but especially of pastors with this new religion.

But, as an English teacher from the United States, I have a unique opportunity to enter these closed communities where the local missionaries could not.

The partnership

After meeting with national missionaries who have spent over eight years laboring to reach this region, a strategy emerged: I can go where they currently cannot.

By teaching English in a village school, I can build trust, form genuine relationships, and slowly introduce the hope of the gospel. In time, when hearts are ready and relationships have been nurtured, local missionaries can join me to begin the work of planting a church.

Mission Statement

To glorify God and expand His kingdom among the rural unreached by education, evangelism, and discipleship.

What do I do?

Missionary

I’ve served with Avant Ministries since 2016, first in the mountain village of Chivoc, Guatemala. Now partnering with local missionaries to reach the rural unreached of the Mixteca Alta in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Evangelism

As an English teacher, I bring the gospel into the classroom: building trust, forming relationships, and sharing Christ where He is rarely known.

Discipleship

In partnership with the local church, I disciple young believers to stand firm in their faith, study the Word, and multiply disciples.

Prayer Requests

For my students

That God will draw them to himself in the midst of a dark and violent world.

For young believers

That God will strengthen them in the midst of suffering and persecution.

For me

That God will continue to give me wisdom, strength, and courage to declare His praises.

For Mixteca Alta

That God will defeat the darkness and show His power so that they may know that He is God.

For Supporters

That God will fill people with a desire to be involved with the advancing of His kingdom among the rural unreached.
